Bessie Smith Elliott Barker, 84, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. She was the beloved daughter of the late Caroline Liggin Elliott and Charles Lee Elliot, born on December 25, 1941, in Winchester, Virginia. Bessie was also the devoted wife of the late Valence Barker.
Bessie was a dedicated employee for the Harrisburg School District, where she served faithfully for over 22 years before retiring. She was also a woman of deep and unwavering faith. Bessie was a faithful member of At the Cross Church of God and Christ, where she served under the leadership of Pastor Christian Robertson. She found great joy in worshiping the Lord. Her love for God was reflected in the way she lived her life and cared for others. Bessie served on the Usher Board, the Outreach Program, and was a Sunday School Teacher for many years.
Bessie leaves to cherish and celebrate her memory, her three children: Catherine, John, and David Washington. She was also blessed with grandchildren: Dawnte’ Washington, Phillip Elliott, and a host of great-grandchildren. She is further survived by a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who were all touched by her love and kindness.
In addition to her parents and her beloved husband, Bessie was preceded in death by her six brothers, five sisters, and two grandchildren. Bessie will be remembered for her steadfast faith, gentle spirit, and the love she shared with her family, her church, and her friends. Her legacy of faith, compassion, and devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Bessie will surely be missed.
Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.
