Elizabeth Ann Exum-Fitzhugh

Elizabeth Ann Exum-Fitzhugh was welcomed into the family of Augustus and Mattie Elizabeth Exum on March 3, 1951, in the beautiful southeastern state of North Carolina. “Liz”, as she was affectionately called by those who loved her, was one of Five sisters, born and raised in Stokes, North Carolina. She peacefully took her last breath in the early morning hours of November 19, 2025.

The Pitt County School in Stokes and the Bethel Union High School in Bethel, North Carolina, were the sites where Elizabeth received her formal education before joining the Keystone Job Corps. This training in her career journey brought her to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where she was employed for over 35 years as a Data Entry Clerk for the Department of Transportation for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. She retired in 2009 and for a time, patiently shared her wisdom and love with the kindergarten class at Hillside Seventh-day Adventist School.

Elizabeth was a member of the Hillside Seventh-day Adventist Church for over 40 years and held the following offices: Assistant Treasurer, Church Clerk, Children’s Story Coordinator, and a member of the singing ensemble, Essence of Joy. She loved the Lord, was a loyal friend, and exuberated a warm, loving spirit towards old and young church members alike. She was generous and often shared her treats, treasures, and “superfinds” from Christmas Tree Shops, Five Below, Dollar Tree, Macy’s, Broad Street Market, and other favorite stores, with friends and loved ones. Her “dump cake” was a favorite among the youth, especially when they earned it for telling the Children’s Story. Reading, shopping, attending church, and eating good food were some of her favorite activities.

It was during this time that Elizabeth caught the eye of the love of her life, Vernon Fitzhugh, one day while donning a beautiful white dress at a special church event. As he began to view her in a different light, Providence brought them together, forming a beautiful union that lasted for almost 28 wonderful years. They were married on December 10, 1997

Elizabeth leaves to cherish her life, service, and memory, her devoted husband, Vernon Fitzhugh JR, who lovingly and tenderly cared for her during her recent illness; sisters, Forrest Griggs, Vivian Smith, ; uncle , Theodore Daniels (Peggy); mother-in-law, Shirley Fitzhugh; father-in-law Vernon Fitzhugh SR; sisters-in-law; Tina Lynch, with whom she shared a special bond; Veronica Fitzhugh, and Nancy Wilkins; brother-in-law, John Fitzhugh; nieces: Charlotte Foster (Shawn), Kim Smith (Antonio), Aviance Sloan, Latisha Mills, Monique Johnston, Lakeisha Caudle, Erica Caudle; and nephews, Eric Griggs, and Timothy Juett, Jr., and a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Augustus and Mattie Elizabeth, and sisters, Geraldine Bryant, and Ivy Gail Exum, and sister-in-law Roberta White.

The family would like to share Elizabeth’s testimony, taken from the words of the apostle, Paul, in 2 Timothy 4:7.

“I have fought a good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the Righteous Judge will award to me on that day, and not to me only, but to all those who love His appearing”. Let us comfort each other with these words.

Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.
