George Dorsey

George Dorsey was born on February 7, 1938, in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, to the late Buddy Hill and Jennie La Rue Dorsey Harris. From a young age, George was known for his warm heart, strong work ethic, and deep sense of purpose. He was raised in a loving family environment where values of faith, service, and community were instilled early on.

He received his education in the Harrisburg area and graduated from William Penn High School. Shortly after completing high school, George answered the call to serve his country. In 1956, he proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served with distinction as a heavy equipment operator. His time in the military not only strengthened his skills but also deepened his faith and dedication to serving others.

While in the Air Force, George found solace and inspiration in reading the Bible. His love for the Word of God became a central part of his life, and he often shared scriptures and spiritual encouragement with those around him. It was during this time that George wholeheartedly accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, a decision that guided him throughout his life.

After completing his military service, George began a long and rewarding career with Bell of Pennsylvania—now known as Verizon. Over more than 30 years of dedicated service, he became known for his professionalism, reliability, and generous spirit. His colleagues and supervisors respected him greatly, and his legacy lives on through the friendships and relationships he built during his tenure.

Beyond his work, George was a man of many passions. A lifelong and devoted fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, he never missed a game and proudly wore the black and gold. He also had a great love for music, often spending his time enjoying his favorite tunes and sharing them with family and friends.

George was a people person through and through. He loved going out to eat, trying new restaurants, and striking up conversations with everyone he met. His charm, quick wit, and infectious laugh made him a joy to be around. More than anything, George loved helping others. Whether offering a ride, lending a hand, or simply being a listening ear, he was always there for those in need.

Above all, George was a family man. He deeply loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and took pride in being a pillar of strength and wisdom in their lives.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janet Burhanan Dorsey; grandparents, Frank and Fannie Mae Dorsey; his siblings, Aldred, Darryl, Darlene, Corol Jean, Sherry, Wanda, Annett, Michael, Bart, Barry, and Edward Harris Jr.; and his great-grandson, Quontell Ramsey.

George leaves behind a legacy of love and faith. He is survived by his devoted daughters, Armonda and her husband Edward Ramsey, April Hall, and Jennie Weedon; his cherished grandchildren, Latreacia and Paul Ramsey, Isaiah Hall, Elijah Hall-Day, India Smith, Ashley, Shay’Quan, and Asia Weedon; and great-grandchildren, London and Peyton Littlejohn, Roman, Naeomi, Seven, Shemar and Titan Ramsey, Ayvrie Weedon, August and Ryleigh Alridge and Casai Young. He is also survived by his stepdaughters, Sharon and Cynthia, and his good friend, Edward Bates. George is lovingly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends who will continue to honor his memory.

George Dorsey will be remembered as a man of great faith, unwavering service, and boundless love. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
