Mother Durden was born in Albany GA. To the late Platt and Mary Mitchell, educated in the Harrisburg School District and graduated from the William Penn Senior High School.
Mother Grace worked at several places during her working career, which included working for the Commonwealth of PA, AMP, Inc. retiring from PP&L (Pennsylvania Power and Light), Harrisburg School District and then finally babysitting for young mothers that were just starting out on their own.
Mother Durden enjoyed singing, directing choirs, which included the Radio Choir, under the former Pastor Rev. Henry L. Williams, now which is named the Mt. Calvary Voices for Christ, under the leadership of Superintendent D.R. Gilmore, The Mt. Calvary Mass Choir, the Harrisburg District Choir, and the Conglomeration of Praise worship group. Many of these groups she participated as one of the directors.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, her sons and grandchildren and all of great grandchildren. She enjoyed all the family reunions that she spent with her sisters and brothers at the parks and picnic grounds. She had a special bond with her sister Mother Ida M. Williams, which she would refer to as her mother, the love of her life her Husband Melvyn whom she adored very much.
She is proceeded by one son Melvyn Jr (Maurice), six sisters and two brothers. She leaves to cherish Her husband Melvyn Durden Sr., Son Elliott (Stacy), ten grandchildren and many Great grandchildren.
