James E. Joppy

March 17, 1936 — February 14, 2023

Harrisburg

James E. Joppy, the 3rd son of the late Robert and Ella Joppy, was born on March 17, 1936, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Raised in central Pennsylvania, James attended primary school in Susquehanna Township and graduated from Susquehanna High School in 1954. A true trailblazer and entrepreneur, James broke barriers when in the 1960s he opened his own home furniture and carpet store. James was known for his strong work ethic, his devotion to the church and dedication to his family.

In 1958, James met Phyllis and a year later the two were married. Together they had five children. While his children were young, James encouraged them to study hard in school and to be committed to uplifting their community. Taking his lessons to heart, his children have achieved tremendous success academically.

James loved spending time with his family, watching the 6-time world champion Pittsburgh Steelers, creating handmade furniture and traveling the world, including a special pilgrimage to Israel. He also loved driving around town, whether in his station wagon or the antique Mustang. James, known as a friend and father figure to many, loved to have a great conversation with everyone who he encountered.

In his later years, James enjoyed spending quality time with his grandchildren and his children. His family was always most important to him. James was predeceased by siblings, Raymond, Harvey, Herman, Carolyn, Betty, Robert, and Alphonso Joppy, as well as special friend Jennifer. He leaves to celebrate his memory; children: James (Melisse), Walter (Pricilla), Nathan, Jeannie, Sophia (Thomas), Jamee; former spouse Phyllis; siblings Juanita, and Rochelle Picket (McKinney); and a host of grandchildren, family, and friends.
