Some souls arrive already illuminated, and Kayla’s soul was definitely one.
Some souls arrive already illuminated, and Kayla’s soul was definitely one.
Kayla Angelica Luckett entered this world at 7:24 in the evening, as if twilight itself paused to make room for her glow. From childhood, Kayla carried a nurturing spirit. She would rise early to prepare breakfast in bed for her mother—a gesture of love expressed through small and careful hands.
She delighted in fashion shows at church, confidently wearing her Godmother Lynn January’s clothes as if rehearsing for the stages life would later place before her. She chased butterflies with wonder and was faithfully followed by Amir Mayers, who loved her like a little brother, mirroring her steps, her laughter, and her curiosity. Kayla also cherished spending quality time in Harrisburg with her God-given family, the Scales and Lewis families. Whether holidays, birthdays, or simply gathering at the house, there was always an abundance of love.
As a teenager, her brilliance sharpened. Academic games thrilled her. Challenges energized her. Excellence was not accidental for Kayla—it was intentional. That intention carried her into adulthood, where determination became her signature. Kayla did not yield to obstacles. She met them, studied them, and moved through them like streams of flowing water.
Her academic achievements were extraordinary, each one earned through discipline, intellect, and vision. Kayla believed deeply in education—not only as accomplishment, but as access, expansion, and liberation. After graduating from Cranbrook School, Kayla attended Chapman University in Orange, California, where she earned a BA in Political Science in 2014. For the past eight months, Kayla served as the Inaugural Director of Residential Life at Cranbrook Schools, a role she secured following a highly competitive national search. To be selected was a testament to her leadership, her integrity, and the way she made institutions stronger simply by entering them.
Returning to Cranbrook was a full-circle blessing. Kayla was a proud 2010 alumna of Kingswood Boarding School, a Horizons-Upward Bound (HUB) Lillian Bauder Scholar. She once walked those halls as a student filled with promise and later returned as a leader. She did not come back simply to occupy space—she returned to create space for others.
Kayla was a light to those coming behind her and to those who stood before her. She taught with passion and traveled internationally, visiting destinations including Cape Town, Cuba, Morocco, and Turks and Caicos. Throughout her life, she remained spiritually anchored, attending services virtually and nurturing her inner life with the same intentionality as her outer achievements.
Then she became a mother. Kayla embraced pregnancy with joy, honoring the sacredness of carrying life. The bond between Kayla and her daughter, Kaylynn, was immediate and undeniable. With bright eyes and wide smiles, Kaylynn’s face would illuminate the moment she saw her mother. It was recognition beyond words—a love that continues beyond time.
Kayla’s earthly chapter closed at 4:54 in the morning, just as dawn prepared to break. Even in departure, she moved with light. Her legacy lives on in the students she mentored, in the doors she opened, in the standards she set, in the courage she modeled, in the daughter who reflects her brilliance, and in every life that feels steadier because Kayla once stood beside it.
She is deeply cherished by her beloved mother, Wanda; her daughter, Kaylynn; and a host of family members, friends, colleagues, and community. Kayla Angelica Luckett was determination wrapped in grace, intellect guided by heart, and leadership grounded in love. Her light does not fade. It continues in hearts, in classrooms, in corridors, in quiet memories, in wide smiles, soft hugs, and bright eyes.
Kayla’s light is forever luminous.
