Mary E. Banks, 89 of Harrisburg, transition peacefully from this life to her heavenly home on Wednesday, May 1, 2019. She was the daughter of the late Herman Alton and Mary (Colbert) Alton and predeceased by her devoted husband Abraham Banks.

Mary was reared in the Catholic School System. She was one of the 1st Black crossing guards for the Harrisburg Police Department under Sergeant Otto. In addition, she was one of the 1st black Head Matron Supervisors for the Department of Corrections at Dauphin County Prison, and later retired in Security for the Dauphin County Nursing Home. Mary was a faithful member of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Jinx Club and enjoyed volunteering, crocheting, watching BET and traveling.

Mary leaves her children Herman Banks, Florence Banks, Shirly Banks-Bennett (George), Vanderbilt Banks, Karen Banks-Johnson (Robert) and Victoria Banks, a brother Joseph Alton, 4 grand, 5 great-grandchildren and a host of family members and friends.
