Stephen R. Haracznak

Stephen “Steve” Richard Haracznak, 79, of Harrisburg, PA, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Steve was born in New Kensington, PA, the third child of Nicholas and Sophie (Mizuik) Haracznak. He graduated from Arnold High School in 1964 and Duquesne University in 1968 with a degree in Fine Arts/Journalism. Following college, Steve proudly served in the United States Army Reserves in New Kensington from 1968 to 1974.

In 1973, Steve moved to Alexandria, Virginia, where he joined the public relations staff of the American Gas Association. He lived in Northern Virginia for 49 years; his professional career spanning more than 35 years managing various non-profit associations as executive director.

Steve was committed to his community and volunteered his time generously throughout his life. He served as an usher at Vienna Presbyterian Church for many years and also volunteered for 19 years as an usher on Sunday evenings during the summer at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts.

After surviving cancer himself, he volunteered to run a prostate cancer support meeting once a month and often spoke with and supported newly diagnosed men.

Perhaps one of Steve’s favorite volunteer experiences was with the Shepherd’s Center of Vienna. He began by driving older adults to medical appointments and later was elected to the organization’s Board of Directors, where he served for 8 years.

Steve was also a lifelong Pittsburgh sports fan, with a special place in his heart for the Steelers. His Pittsburgh roots remained an important part of his identity throughout his life.

Steve had a lifelong fascination with the spooky and the unexplained, especially UFOs and Bigfoot, and he never lost his curiosity about what might be out there.

Above all, Steve was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy (Lawson) Haracznak; his daughters, Lauren Simon of Hummelstown, PA; Sara Craig (Jerry) of Palmyra, PA; and Alison Powell (Nick) of New Orleans, LA; and his grandchildren, Brooke and Molly Simon, Brody Craig and Sophie Powell. He is also survived by his sister, Lillian Grieco.

In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his brothers, Rudolph Adamiak and Michael Haracznak.

Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Steve’s memory. A celebration of life with family and friends will be held at a later date.
