William Jefferson, known affectionately as Bill, lived a life rich with love, laughter, and purpose. On July 18, 2025, he peacefully passed at home, surrounded by memories of a life well-lived. Born on June 22, 1936, in Bellport, Long Island, New York, to the late Leroy and Margaret (Washington) Jefferson, he was a treasured Son, Brother, Dad, Pop-Pop, Uncle, and generous Friend. He touched the lives of many with his profound sense of humor and outgoing nature.
SERVICE: Bill's journey as a veteran began when he joined the U.S. Army, serving from 1955 to 1958. His military service instilled in him values of discipline and honor, which he later brought to life through his long tenure with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard (1974-1996) in the field of Logistical Supply and Support. With a career spanning 25 years, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to serving his country, embodying the very essence of patriotism.
EDUCATION: His dedication would lead him to the campus of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, where he took advantage of the G.I. Bill to pursue higher education. Bill graduated from Lincoln University in 1962 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and a minor in Accounting.
CAREER: Upon graduating from Lincoln University, William moved to Philadelphia, PA, and shared his passion for numbers and finance as an Accounting/Business teacher with high school students in the Philadelphia, PA, school district. He then relocated to Harrisburg, PA, where he continued his love for numbers and began his career at the Commonwealth of PA, Bureau of Comptroller's Office: Audits, where he served in many capacities spanning over 20 years. Bill was the FIRST Black man to hold a high-level position as a comptroller in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. His meticulous nature and unparalleled work ethic allowed him to break barriers while building an inspiring legacy for future generations.
OMEGA MAN: Beyond his professional achievements, Bill held a special bond with the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He was initiated into Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. on February 27, 1960, at (Bloody) BETA chapter of Lincoln University. With over 60 years of Fraternal Service, Brother Jefferson was awarded the 2021 Founders Lifetime Achievement Award, Kappa Omega chapter of Harrisburg, PA, for his commitment and leadership bestowed over his years of service to the fraternity. His involvement with the fraternity not only showcased his commitment to brotherhood and philanthropy but also highlighted his unwavering support for those around him.
As the past officer of Kappa Omega’s Executive Board, he served as the Keeper of Finance, where he performed his duty exceptionally well. It is noted that long after his executive responsibilities ended, he continued to assist all subsequent financial officers. His accounting decorum and fiduciary leadership continued in supporting the countless chapter endeavors. Notable examples include: Mardi Gras Committee, Achievement Week Celebration, Manna Café Operations, Way and Means Financial Committee, Budget Committee, and the Chapter Cook-out. Financial reports provided by Brother Jefferson were always precise and left no doubt of their conclusion and will forever be remembered as “ICONIC.”
INTERESTS: Bill enjoyed collecting and listening to jazz music while enjoying a cold brew. An avid dancer, he could cut a step or two! He especially enjoyed the holidays and took great pleasure in carving the family turkey/ham while serving André Cold Duck wine. He took great pride in his home and beloved swimming pool where he enjoyed watching nieces and nephews play. In his downtime, he NEVER missed his soap operas, where “The Young and the Restless” was his all-time favorite.
FAMILY: He was preceded in death by his brothers: Leroy Jr., Eugene, Bernard, and sister Arlene yet his spirit lives on in his children - William (Buddy), Kia, Dana N., and their mother, Dana E. Jefferson; sisters-in-law Beverly (Bernard), Marcia (Eugene), and a host of nieces and nephews. Also left to cherish his memory are his long-time friend, Dr. Doris Ross, and caregiver Yvonne Gordon.
Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers.
